Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is paramount to an individual's general health. The mouth serves as the gateway to the body. What you consume gets in through the mouth. Also, pathogens enter other parts of the body through an individual's mouth. If there is poor oral health, then it can contribute to many health problems in the body. A patient could have chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or stroke. Patients could also develop Alzheimer's disease and cancer.
Every family and individual should maintain proper oral hygiene to ensure healthy gums and teeth. From the 2014 American Academy of Periodontology campaign dubbed “Love The Gums You're With”, we have seen three aspects that have helped families in their oral health over the years.
The 2014 “Love the Gums You're With” Campaign
Launched by the AAP, the 2014 “Love the Gums You're With” aimed to teach Americans ways to take better charge of their oral health, particularly the gums. The campaign featured simple steps that families should take in their oral hygiene routine. These included brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, and getting an annual thorough evaluation for periodontal disease from a periodontist or general dentist.
How the Campaign Helped Families?
The AAP and Chris Harrison, the host of the reality TV dating show “The Bachelor” from the ABC Channel helped in implementing the steps described in the campaign. Harrison, a love pundit played a great role in creating national awareness to help consumers understand periodontal disease and how they can successfully make long-term relationships with healthy gums.
Patients are able to understand why they have to keep their oral hygiene efforts strong and why they need to see a dentist routinely for checks of gum health. Patients were also able to focus on early treatment of gum disease and embrace preventive care as the pillar for healthy gums and teeth.
