Does a Cavity Feel Different?

Posted on 12/30/2019 by Hilton Israelson, DDS
Does a Cavity Feel Different?Growing up, you have your teeth come in, and, in many cases, they remain healthy for a good, long time. However, as time goes on, many of us wind up with a cavity or two, sometimes more.

If you do not have a cavity, you may be wondering if it feels different than your natural tooth. The truth is, they feel different for everyone, but yes, they do feel a little different than what your natural tooth does at first. As time goes on, you get used to the feeling and it no longer feels off.

Getting a Filling for the First Time

When you have never had a filling before, it can be a little nerve-wracking to get one, or even at the idea of getting one. However, it is one of the most common procedures that we perform. They are simple and can help save your tooth to where it can last the rest of your life.

What happens is we numb up the area, scrape out the decayed part of the tooth, and refill that gap with something that is safe for your tooth. It may make the tooth feel a little heavier at first, simply because the tooth will feel different. While we finish up the filling, we will make sure that when your teeth come together, it still feels comfortable to you.

It may feel a little different when you first get your new filling, but that feeling will fade. After a few days, the tooth will feel the same as it always did, and you will go about your life like normal. Do not fear getting a filling. They are common and they save teeth all the time. If you have questions about the filling process or how it is going to feel, ask us at your next appointment.
