However, a periodontal abscess is not a normal toothache and should not be mistaken for one. The intimate familiarity with routine toothaches, unfortunately, makes a cavalier attitude about periodontal abscess highly dangerous.

Abscesses are easily recognized by their trademark pocket of pus that forms at the site of the infection. They are caused by a variety of factors, including untreated cavities and trauma to the site. Unlike a normal infection that might go away naturally once your body fights it off, periodontal abscesses do not heal on their own and require medical intervention.

Treating a periodontal abscess is fairly straightforward and involves lancing and draining the abscess, followed by antibiotics to treat the infection. If the tooth can be saved, we will perform a root canal on it.
However, it is absolutely vital to seek immediate treatment for this infection. Failure to intervene can cause permanent, lasting damage to not only your mouth but also your body – and possible death.
