Symptoms of Stage One Gum Disease

Posted on 10/19/2020 by Hilton Israelson, DDS
Symptoms of Stage One Gum DiseaseStage one gum disease is also known as Gingivitis. It's a mild stage in the disease progression of the gum disease, and identifying its symptoms is essential in the treatment. This way, you can act quickly to stop the progression of the disease before the damage is irreversible. If gingivitis is left untreated, it could easily progress to periodontitis, which is the severe stage. It's the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. The good thing is that symptoms of stage one gum disease are very easy to spot and act on.

Bleeding Gums

One main symptom of stage one gum disease is bleeding gums. A healthy gum does not bleed unless injured, so in case you experience any bleeding either during brushing, flossing, or after chewing something hard, then it might be gingivitis developing. Even if you see blood oozing from your gums without doing any of these activities, do not ignore it. Consider visiting us to identify the problem you have before it progresses.

Bad Breath

There are very many causes of bad breath. Each time you experience bad breath does not necessarily mean you suffer from stage one gum disease but could be an indicator as well. Halitosis may be due to something you ate, or you might have missed brushing your teeth for a day or two. Bad breath is associated with gingivitis since the bacteria that causes gum disease also bring about bad breath as it breaks down food particles in your mouth. Bad breath is quite unpleasant and embarrassing, and it is also quite easy to spot.

Swollen Gums

As you brush your teeth, you should always examine your oral cavity in the mirror. Healthy gums are firm and pink in color, but if you notice your gums turning red and puffy, high chances are you are suffering stage one gum disease.

If you think you have any of the symptoms mentioned above, give us a call today. Find out more about what we can do to help you solve your gum disease issues before they get serious.
