Dental implant Treatment for Periodontitis

Posted on 10/11/2021 by Hilton Israelson, DDS
Dental implant Treatment for PeriodontitisDental implants are the best option when you need a long lasting and natural looking replacement for missing teeth. In most scenarios, we will plant a titanium fixture into the jawbone and allow it to rest until it is strong enough to support a crown(artificial tooth). Implants are also great when it comes to preserving the underlying bone that supports teeth, which can start to deteriorate in the absence of a tooth.

How Do Dental implants Work?

We will replace a single tooth or several teeth at the same time using implants. When you want one tooth replaced, we insert a single fixture into the jawbone and allow it to fuse with the bone over the course of a few months. A dental examination will confirm if the implant has taken its place as it should before our dentists install the crown on the implant.

Dental implants are an ideal treatment when replacing multiple missing teeth. Instead of individual implants for every missing tooth, we will use implants to support a bridgework of replacement teeth. This takes the pressure off nearby natural teeth needed to support the crown, thereby maintaining their integrity.

Dental implants can also help you replace the entire arch of upper and lower teeth. If the jawbone is sturdy enough, you can get away with only four implants to support an entire bridge of new teeth. In scenarios where the jawbone has deteriorated in strength, the number of implants used to support the replacement teeth will increase accordingly.

Care and Maintenance Post Dental Implant Surgery

Certain precautions taken by patients post a dental implant surgery will make sure the implants take root and settle in properly. Poor dental hygiene or excessive biting force can loosen the attachments from the bone rendering the surgery unsuccessful. Compulsive habits such as clenching or grinding your teeth can also move the implants out of place. Brushing and flossing your teeth as directed by our dentists will allow the site of the surgery to heal optimally.
