The Importance of Scheduling a 3 Month Periodontal Maintenance Care Visit

Posted on 10/25/2021 by Hilton Israelson, DDS
The Importance of Scheduling a 3 Month Periodontal Maintenance Care VisitPeriodontal maintenance is the best way to prevent periodontal disease from aggressively spreading. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss, and the infection may spread to the jawbone and surrounding tissues. As periodontal maintenance aims to treat periodontal disease, it is essential we do this on the right schedule. This means you should ideally see us every three months for a follow-up to prevent the disease from advancing.

What Happens During Periodontal Maintenance Care?

An extensive, deep cleaning and periodontal maintenance can address gum infection issues. The dentist or the hygienist then formulates a plan for recare for the subsequent visits. This treatment involves close monitoring of gum tissue for pockets of inflammation, debriding infected tissue, and removing tartar accumulated between visits.

We recommend you come in to have your teeth professionally cleaned on a consistent basis, as even a little amount of build-up can aggravate the existing periodontal condition. Bacteria settles after deep cleaning and, in as little as ninety days or three months, can cause significant damage to your gums once more.

During periodontal maintenance recare, our hygienist will check to see if there are deepening gum pockets. An antiseptic flush, topical gum medication, or an antibiotic is often used during these visits to halt infection, especially if there is quick progression.

We may advise surgery during periodontal maintenance visits if these pockets appear to be worse than before, like the dentist and hygienist merits. The surgery depends on the existing condition of the gums and underlying areas.

Various other inflammatory diseases like diabetes, heart, and kidney diseases have links to periodontal disease. It is essential to keep a close eye on it. Periodontal disease does not always equate to pain and may seemingly appear out of nowhere.

Book us a visit to our clinic and see what we can do to give you a better, healthier smile. Our friendly team of professionals administers periodontal maintenance efficiently to help you gain better oral health.
