What is Gum Contouring and Reshaping?

Posted on 1/24/2022 by Hilton Israelson, DDS
What is Gum Contouring and Reshaping?Patients with gums that rest too high or too low on their teeth are usually the most viable candidates for gum contouring. Also known as reshaping the gums or tissue sculpting, this is more of a cosmetic procedure that helps even the gum line, giving patients the desired smile that enhances their appearance and self-confidence. Aside from having cosmetic benefits, gum contouring is an effective solution to mitigating periodontal disease. However, not everyone qualifies for this treatment and requires a professional opinion to determine whether you meet the health and physical requirements.

How Gum Grafting is Done

A dental professional should do the gum contouring procedure, especially since the necessary equipment needed is available for successful reshaping. There are several instruments used, from lasers, scalpels, and radiosurgery.

The importance of the laser is to re-contour and seal the tissue where surgery has been done to achieve the desired look and prevent further bleeding. The dental professional can also use the laser to alleviate hollow points in the gum that trap bacteria resulting in infection. A local anesthetic is usually used to numb the affected area and ease the patient's nerves for the procedure.

Treatment After Surgery

After undergoing gum reshaping, it is advisable to maintain good oral hygiene, especially for the next few weeks until the gum is fully healed. This usually involves regular brushing and flossing, and it should be done gently to avoid causing damage to the healing gum. If this is not adhered to, the patient risks causing bleeding and infection.

Most dental professionals usually recommend using a gentle mouth rinse to kill the germs without causing sensitivity due to alcohol burn. Many dental treatments improve someone's appearance and oral health, depending on the magnitude of the damage from disease, trauma, or congenital disability. A dental expert can help you decide whether gum contouring is the best option for you.
