How Old Is Too Old To Get Dental Implants?

How Old Is Too Old To Get Dental Implants?Dental implants are an ideal solution for aging adults just as they are for young people. The reason is that these restorations are permanent compared to the removable lower and upper dentures. Dental implants can be used to anchor crowns, bridges, and full-arch fixed hybrid dentures also known as the All-on-4 system. Dental implants come with a streamlined feature to ensure a natural look when you talk or smile. If you are seeking fixed bridges or permanent dentures, then you may consider dental implants. Even with resorption or thinning of the jawbone, a periodontist can use grafting or modified implant treatments to anchor full dentures permanently.

When it is too Old to have Dental Implants?

Although there is an age limit for young patients, it's never too old for seniors to get dental implants. Provided that a senior citizen is free of tooth decay, gum disease, and has healthy enough jawbone, implants surgery can be performed and is a highly predictable treatment.

Even if you have suffered bone loss due to tooth loss or periodontal disease, you may still qualify for implants. Our periodontist will screen you for health concerns before he or she plans the surgery. If you are under any prescription or OTC medication, be sure to let the periodontist know. Medications and supplements may interfere with osseointegration, the process in which the implants fuse with your jawbone. As long as osseointegration can take place without problems and you can care for the implants properly, you can be a candidate even if you are 67, 75, or 80.

Oftentimes, when seniors have missing teeth, they notice changes in their health and personality. Wearing removable prostheses like dentures is likely to cause rubbing on the jawbone and gums, often creating sores and triggering bone loss. To find out if you can get dental implants at old age, contact us today for screening.
