PRP is a relatively new area of periodontics. In many ways, it allows us to provide safer and more effective treatment. The following information is designed to help you better understand the application of PRP at our office.

What Is Platelet Rich Plasma?


In short, platelet rich plasma is a by-product of our blood. Our blood consists mostly of a liquid known as plasma. However, this plasma also contains red blood cells, white blood cells, and most importantly, platelets.

The platelets are responsible for blood clots, but they also assist in tissue regeneration with the release of growth factors. These growth factors help your body repair itself by stimulating stem cells. When more stem cells are stimulated there is more tissue regeneration.

PRP is separated from the rest of your plasma in a centrifuge. The concentration of platelets allows for a greatly accelerated healing rate when applied to a wound. This can make PRP extremely useful for tissue regeneration procedures.

Using Platelet Rich Plasma


At our office, we may suggest platelet rich plasma during some procedures. The most common applications include bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, and single dental implant or multiple dental implant placement. It can also be useful while correcting soft abnormities, such as a cleft lip or palate.

Bone and soft tissue grafts are designed to address bone deterioration and gum recession. In many cases, a bone graft is a necessary step during the dental implant process. With the application of PRP, we can expedite and improve the healing process following your graft.

Benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma


There are benefits associated with platelet rich plasma, some of which include:
•  Quicker healing period. The growth factors in PRP help tissue regenerate much faster by concentrating the elements responsible for healing.
•  Convenience. A faster healing period makes your procedures much more comfortable and effective. Also, PRP does not require an additional procedure. It can be placed at the same time as your graft.
•  Safety. Because the PRP comes from your plasma, there is no risk of rejection or infection. Disease transmission is also not an issue.
•  Cost effective. In the past, PRP was limited to the hospital setting due to the cost of the procedure. Thanks to technological advancements, we can now produce PRP right here in our office, making it a much more cost-effective procedure.
•  Easy application. PRP is easy to handle and to use, meaning the application has a high success rate.
