One of the common procedures is to give the patient one or more dental implants. We can even replace an entire mouth with new teeth if need be. Do not assume that you are not a good candidate to receive dental implants. Here is what you need to know.
Who Will Dental Implants Work For?
The good news is that most people are good candidates for dental implants. Here are some of the factors that we will look for, and also something that we can do about one common problem. Before we determine whether or not you will be a good candidate for dental implants, we will want to make sure that your overall oral health is good. This will include an exam where we will look for things such as sores, gum disease, and even oral cancer.
Your overall health is a factor as well. Oral problems can lead to problems in other parts of your body, so we want to make sure that you are in good health. Your age can be a factor. As people age, their teeth and their gums can deteriorate, making you not a good candidate for dental implants. If that is the case, we will see if there is another way that we can help with your missing teeth.
Time is also a consideration. Dental implants are not a one-step process. You will be having surgery on your jaw, and you will need several weeks or possibly several months to heal. You will not need to sit home doing nothing during that time, but there will be limits on what you can eat.
To receive dental implants, you need to have a decent amount of bone in your jaw. If that is not the case, we may still be able to give you the implants. We will recommend a bone graft first. This will help you to have more bone in your jaw, but it will add time to the healing process because the bone graft will need to heal before we proceed.
